How many more people dreamed of being billionaires or Olympians? How many dreamed of it, how many watched their dreams pass them by? The only ones whose names you remember are the ones who achieved their goals.

Consider the goal to be a destination of your journey. If you were the captain of a ship who wanted to travel from London to NY, there would be a lot to do to prepare. Obtaining your food and supplies, you’d pack clothes appropriate for your journey, decide on a route to take, and check weather forecasts are just a few of the things you’d do to insure successfully reaching your goal. It would be a lot of work to prepare, yet the journey hasn’t even begun!

Imagine if you didn’t do those things and you were in the middle of the sea before you realized something was amiss. You didn’t have enough supplies, food, or water. You forgot someone or something of extreme importance. Not preparing properly is the doom of any journey.

This may be obvious when it comes to taking a voyage yet it escapes so many when it comes to goal achievement. Once your goal is set, the first thing to do is take a look at where you are now, what you will need, and what knowledge you will need to complete your journey. It’s ok if you don’t know every detail – even a sailor can’t foresee every possibility – but if you have the major, foreseeable things taken care of, these unforeseen circumstances won’t be trip-enders.

In most cases there is typically some insight that is required in order for you to accomplish your goal. Whether it’s education via books or a class, a conversation with a mentor, or research into a business that has made it big… these things are all insights you can use to your benefit. However non-essential they may seem, they are of extreme value and important to your success. It may not feel like you are making progress but it has been said that for every step you take toward your goal, your goal takes one step towards you. This “step” is any action in the direction of your objective!

Intelligently directed action is as important to achievement as setting the right goal. The two cannot be separated. Action is only useful if it’s properly directed. Start with the end in mind.

If you are involved in an accident on the road, a crated dog is less likely to get loose on the road or be flung from one part of the car to another.

How do you crate train your dog? Slowly, carefully and with kindness. Begin by making sure the door to the crate will not shut. Either remove it or tie it back so the entrance to the crate is open. If you have a young pup you can feed him in the crate but because dogs are messy drinkers don’t leave a water bowl in the crate. Pad the bottom with soft bedding or, for housetraining purposes, paper. Be sure to take your pup outside for elimination as soon as he has finished eating and as soon as he wakes up since puppies will eliminate soon after eating and waking.

Start the crate training as soon as you get your dog. The first thing to do, after securing the door so it can’t close, is introduce him to the crate by tossing a tasty treat inside. When he goes in to get the treat, calmly praise him. Do this several times until the dog doesn’t hesitate to enter the crate. Once he is consistently willing, even eager to enter, close the door. Leave it closed for a few seconds and, as long as he isn’t whining or scratching at the door, open it and allow him to leave. Praise him. Repeat the entire process: entering, closing the door, waiting and then opening the door, gradually increasing the length of time the door is closed. At the same time you toss the treat into the crate you can tell your dog to ‘kennel’ or some other word that he will understand means to go into the crate.

Don’t abuse the use of the crate. It is for your dog’s security and comfort, not his prison.

When the Spanish landed in what is now Mexico, they brought with them their own grape vines with the purpose of planting them. And although they found grapes already indigenous to the area, they preferred their own varieties. As soon as Spanish colonialists were able to grow, crush and ferment their own supply of wine, imports from Spain fell dramatically. Thus in 1699, King Charles II of Spain imposed a ban on wine production in New Spain, except for the purpose of communion. For over 110 years, wine was only produced on a small scale in Mexico, that is until the War of Independence ended in 1821. Production rose dramatically as Catholic friars began to grow grapes and produce large barrels of wine. Some of the valleys used for grapes at this time are still known to produce premium wine grapes today.

When Mexico’s Reform War began during the 1850′s, the lands of the churches were handed over to the state, which meant the vineyards were largely destroyed or abandoned. When the war was over, the most important vineyards that produced the best grapes were sold to a private group. Despite the use of premium wine grapes, the wine was overly sweet and of low quality. The next 60 years were a growth period for the Mexican wine industry. President Jose de la Cruz Porfirio Diaz Mori was a fan of Mexican wine and encouraged its production. The industry flourished until the violence of the Mexican Revolution destroyed most of the country’s vineyards.

It was not until the 1980′s that wine production began to climb once again in Mexico, perhaps because of the surge in popularity taking place in California. As Mexican vintners become more experienced, they quality of the wine increases. In fact, some wineries in Mexico have already been won international awards. As wine still struggles to gain popularity as a common beverage among locals, brandy has already found its place. Especially brandy of the sherry variety, it is the most widespread distilled liquor consumed by Mexicans in Mexico.

Wine grapes are grown in three main areas in Mexico: the Baja peninsula, the central provinces and the province of La Laguna. Over the 6200 acres in these regions, the white grapes grown include chenin blanc, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and viognier. The red wine grapes grown in Mexico are tempranillo, dolcetto, sirah and all five bordeaux grape varieties.

There is a growing trend towards wine tourism in Mexico, especially focused around the many wine festivals throughout the country. Every August in the Valley Guadalupe the Fiesta de la Vendimia takes place. Wine tasting is always part of the festival, as well as various contests, tours, cook-offs, concerts and fishing tournaments. Another such event is the annual Malagon Family Celebration held on the family’s 500 acre property. There is a horse show, live music, food and of course, wine.

Most of the wine consumed in Mexico today is still imported, but more and more restaurants and resorts are adding local vintages to their wine list. If you are planning to visit Mexico, make a point of learning about the wine industry there, and perhaps plan a tour of a local winery. Aside from the majestic beaches and luxurious resorts, Mexico has a rich history of wine to offer as well.
