Chords are the next step in the learning progression. A chord is just a small grouping of three or more notes that are all hit at the same time. The sounds created from these chords have a much richer and larger sound than that of any single note. There are lots of chord structures that must be learned, as well as the major and minor keys in which those structures could be played. Add to that the fact that chords can also be played in different octaves and it quickly gets clear that the average player can easily invest months just scratching the surface of the various chord theories.
