Prior to starting a business, please give this a read. I cannot say there aren’t good reasons to be your own boss. I would claim that people don’t always talk about the downsides. I have been running various brands for over 8 years now, and have seen many of the ups and downs of being a company director. This is an honest insight into what running a business is like. Are you ready to find out about the bad sides of running a business?

For starters say goodbye to your social life. Businesses that offer spare time are few and far between! The first three years of running a business is normally the hardest. Even should your business grow, you should get used to very long unsociable hours. Before considering company formation, do consider the effect long hours will have on your life. Not just you -how will your wife or husband take to you not being around? Is it worth risking a marriage for a business. If you have kids, similarly, what is the point of working all hours god send, if you never have time to spend with your children? You will find yourself working evenings, and for many years I worked both a Saturday and Sunday. Sometimes, I wish I had stayed at university for the rest of my life!

If you are used to a quiet, easy job, think again. Running your own company will lumber you with immense responsibility. Everything from making sure the company is making enough money to pay bills and staff, to sorting the problem out when the brown stuff hits the fan. When it all goes wrong, it will be you with the responsibility of fixing the situation. Still thinking of quitting that cushy job?

Some companies are profitable from the start. Natural businessmen and women have the innate ability to make shed loads of cash with little effort. However for the less gifted of us, expect to invest your own money, and then wait a long time for a return. New companies haemorrhage money. You can put your whole life into a company and not get a return. At the end your company could fail and you could be lumbered with huge debts.

Dealing with difficult customers has to be one of the most difficult parts of running a company. Many customers are grateful, understanding and appreciate value for money. Some customers, quite frankly, should be locked away. Difficult customers come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. First there is the customer that finds every opportunity to be rude and impolite. There is the customer that never pays their bill on time. There is the customer that wants everything now and has no patience whatsoever. The know it all customer is my personal favourite.

Do consider there are many circumstances beyond your control. How well you do will be decided on how you leap over hurdles that are put in your path. And don’t listen to everything I have to say- there are a hundred and one reasons for being a business owner. There is the potential to make yourself rich, and independent. However as a final reminder, do consider most businesses do fail.

Should you require assistance with new company formations, why not talk to Optimum Formations. They expertise in UK company formation.
